Kamasi Washington, born and raised in Los Angeles, is a versatile multi-instrumentalist, composer, and bandleader. His unique blend of traditional jazz with funk, soul, and hip-hop results in a recognizable and innovative sound. In 2015, he released his groundbreaking debut album ‘The Epic’, which immediately garnered praise in the contemporary jazz scene. That same year, he also made a significant contribution to Kendrick Lamar’s album ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’, further solidifying his influence not only within the jazz but also within the hip-hop scene.

Since then, he has built an impressive body of work, with albums such as ‘Heaven and Earth’ and ‘The Harmony of Difference’. In 2020, he earned praise and recognition for his compositions for Michelle Obama’s documentary ‘Becoming’, earning him Emmy and Grammy nominations. In the same year, Dinner Party was formed, a collaboration between four renowned musicians: Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, and 9th Wonder. They released an EP that was praised for its progressive approach to music-making and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Progressive R&B Album category.

In May 2024 he released his lated album ‘Fearless Movement’, inspired by dance and the birth of his first daughter. With his eponymous tour, he will visit Paradiso on April 20th.

On Thursday, April 3, Super-Sonic Jazz returns to Skatecafe for a brand-new edition of Super-Sonic Jam. The concept of Super-Sonic Jam was born a few years ago in the basement of Paradiso during the annual Super-Sonic Jazz Festival. These informal jam sessions brought musicians and visitors together to play deep into the night—where spontaneity, creativity, and improvisation took center stage. Since early 2024, Skatecafe has been the new home of Super-Sonic Jam, with every edition selling out in no time.

Each session, Super-Sonic Jazz invites different artists and collectives to host the jam. In previous editions, the stage was taken over by London-based Steam Down, Haarlem’s INI Movement, and Amsterdam’s Els Jam and Higherlife Jam. Super-Sonic Jam has also been invited to curate jams at major events such as North Sea Jazz Festival and SMIB TNO Fest.

Who will take the stage this time remains a surprise. But one thing is certain: every edition is bursting with energy, featuring guest musicians and vocalists who spontaneously elevate the set. Expect an electrifying fusion of talent, energy, improvisation, and musical magic.

Skatecafe
From 18:00 to 20:00, you can order pizza at Dick & Dick, but reservations are required. Dick & Dick is part of Skatecafe and is located behind the venue, on the square. And for those who still have energy left after the jam, you’re in luck—SIEM, one of Super-Sonic Jazz’s resident DJs, will be providing the perfect vibes to keep the night going.

OSHI
Super-Sonic Jam is part of OSHI, a collaborative project where music venues and talent development organizations from Haarlem, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and The Hague join forces to help emerging artists advance their careers. OSHI aims to build a sustainable infrastructure for talented acts, supporting them in their artistic, organizational, and personal growth.

OSHI is a joint initiative by Patronaat, Popcentrum Slachthuis, Stichting INI Movement, BIRD, House of Knowledge, Paradiso, Super-Sonic Jazz, PAARD, and Orisun Studio.

Super-Sonic Jam x skatecafe

Khari Lucas, with his musical alias Contour, belongs to a striking group of young artists who blend the traditions of black music with a modern, avant-garde approach to songwriting. Having started out as a producer, he expanded his musical knowledge with albums such as ‘Onwards’ (2022), ‘Love Suite’ (2021) and ‘Weight’ (2021), in which he switches between genres and disciplines such as dark, sample-driven R&B , post-punk and new wave.

Despite these musical excursions, his sound remains recognizable, thanks to his voice, flow and candid lyrics, which in turn are strongly influenced by rap. Khari’s curiosity remains evident on his upcoming album ‘Take Off from Mercy’. This time he leaves the samples behind and focuses on guitar-driven songwriting, with a mix of blues, tropicalia, hip-hop, post-punk and indie rock. The album documents the lessons he learned along the way. Together with his co-producer Omari, Khari worked on the songs in various cities worldwide, with the central theme of transformation through migration.

After the album’s release this fall, he will embark on an extensive tour through the US, UK and Europe, including Amsterdam on February 11.

The setting and layout of the venue are carefully designed to optimize the transformative potential of the music, encouraging visitors to sit in silence and fully immerse themselves in the melodies and rhythms. The concept of Ripples, created by Bruno Sitton, focuses on enriching local art communities and spotlighting impactful local talent through collaboration with diverse musicians, artists, and performers. Each Ripples event offers a new experience; immerse yourself in this world and be carried away on this musical and spiritual journey.

About Ripples 3 – If Plants Could Talk
Ripples 3 explores the hidden communication of plants and what we can learn from it. The centerpiece of this experience is an Interactive Sound Sculpture, enabling musicians and plants to interact and create unique soundscapes and magical new creations. This edition weaves together music, technology, and nature to explore the deep connection between the human experience and the natural world.
In addition, there will be immersive audiovisual elements that create an all-encompassing experience, where attendees don’t just feel like spectators but become part of the whole. This edition promises to be a rich and connective experience once again, focusing on how plants can help us connect more deeply with ourselves and the world around us.

Higherlife Collective is a vibrant musical ensemble that brings together the rich traditions of Ghanaian Highlife music, uniting both the young and older generations of talented musicians living in the Netherlands. The collective was founded by the visionary drummer and artist, Junya, whose lifelong passion for Highlife music laid the foundation for this unique musical journey. The collective is not only a celebration of the rich musical heritage of Ghana but also a testament to the power of collaboration between seasoned veterans and emerging talents. The name “Higherlife Collective” itself reflects the group’s commitment to elevating and celebrating the essence of Highlife music, transcending generational boundaries and fostering a sense of unity among its members.

For this special night of music they are collaborating with the all-star brass band collective Gallowstreet for a night of highly danceable, horn-infused highlife music.

Arp Frique begint aan een nieuw avontuur met zijn liefde voor organische, funk-gebaseerde muziek, met obscure synthesizers, sprankelende baslijnen en wervelende gitaren. Deze fusie creëert een P-funk meets gospel-disco hybride die gegarandeerd indruk zal maken. Hij wordt vergezeld door Brandon Delagraentiss, de 'zoon van een predikant' uit Houston, Texas, wiens Amsterdamse koor, The Gospel Experience, krachtige vocalen levert. Brandon deelt de leadzang op nummers met de legendarische in LA geboren zangeres Rocq-E Harrell, bekend van haar werk met Stevie Wonder, Patti Labelle en Earth Wind & Fire, evenals tournees met Diana Ross en Barry White. Met langdurige collaborators Marissa Nyamekye en Marilonah Copra is Arp Frique & The Perpetual Singers klaar om te imponeren tijdens Super-Sonic Jazz Festival.

Een clubnacht waar het fundament van clubmuziek weer op de eerste plaats staat: disco. Waar we tijdloze klassiekers en nieuwe geluiden binnen disco een plek geven als voer voor de dansvloer. Paradiso, de plek met veel discohistorie, is bij uitstek de plek voor deze nacht. Daar waar veel legendarische optredens hebben plaatsgevonden en unieke zielen hun energie hebben gedeeld. Kamasi Washington

Kokoroko is een afrobeatband uit Zuid-Londen. De groep staat onder leiding van trompettist Sheila Maurice-Grey, die de jonge bandleden (allen afkomstig van verschillende jazzconservatoria in de stad) bij elkaar bracht. Kokoroko’s muziek klinkt als een moderne variant op de West-Afrikaanse muziek van vroeger, geïnspireerd door iconische artiesten als Fela Kuti, Ebo Taylor en Tony Allen. De groep bestaat naast bandleider Maurice-Grey uit een vaste saxofonist, trombonist, bassist, gitarist en percussionist, en nodigt daarnaast regelmatig bevriende muzikanten uit om hen bij te staan op het podium tijdens hun swingende, energieke liveshows. Afgelopen jaar stond de groep in een uitverkocht Paradiso tijdens Super-Sonic Jazz Festival. Goed nieuws, op 8 november staan ze opnieuw in onze Grote Zaal inclusief nieuw werk.
